Neem or Azadirachta Indica is a tree in the mahogany family Meliaceae. In East Africa it is also known as Muarubaini (Swahili), which means the tree of the 40, as it is said to treat 40 different diseases. In India, the tree is variously known as "Divine Tree," "Heal All;' "Nature's Drugstore" or "Sarvaroghari"for all diseases. In Arabic its called neeb.

Products made from Neem have proven medicinal properties, being anthelmintic, anti-fungal, anti-diabetic, anti-bacterial and anti-viral as well as being a blood purifier. It is considered a major component in ayurvedic medicine and is particularly prescribed for skin disease.

Neem oil is antifungal and insecticidal in nature. In India, it has been used in traditional medicine for skin infections and allergies. Neem flowers are used in Indian cooking as they improve digestion while the oil extracted from them is widely used in aromatherapy for its calming and relaxing effect.

Aqueous extracts of neem leaves have demonstrated significant anti­diabetic potential. Traditionally, tooth cleaning was done by chewing of slender neem branches. Neem leaf paste is applied to the skin to treat acne.
